How To Break In A Glove is the first full-length work to be developed as part of City Theatre’s HOMEGROWN playwright development program, which is designed to give local writers the time, tools, and guidance to create new work.

The public is invited to attend a nostalgic, Miami-themed opening night celebration beginning at 6:30 p.m. in the Thomson Plaza for the Arts, featuring music from the 90s, a selection of Cuban foods, and a photo moment before the show.

For guests with accessibility needs, the Arsht provides accessible seating and complimentary assistive listening devices for all performances, along with sign language interpretation, open captioning, and audio description at select shows to ensure an inclusive experience for all guests.

“I’m incredibly proud that City Theatre is premiering this exceptional new play by Miami playwright Chris Anthony Ferrer, developed through our HOMEGROWN program,” says Margaret M. Ledford, Artistic Director of City Theatre. “It’s a powerful affirmation of our commitment to nurturing local artists and local stories. How to Break in a Glove is unmistakably Miami, and audiences who love this city will see themselves reflected onstage.”

In 1999 Miami, an 11-year-old boy clings to the fractured pieces of his Cuban-American family: an iron-willed grandfather, a devoted but weary grandmother, a father fighting for relevance and a mother torn between rebellion and responsibility. When a night of crisis unearths buried tensions, love and survival collide in a battle for connection, legacy and the desperate need to belong. As with a new baseball glove, they must break in their bonds, stretching, softening and learning to hold on before it’s too late.

How To Break In A Glove features an all-Hispanic cast from Miami including Barbara Bonilla*, Andy Quiroga, Randy Garcia, Kaelyn A. Gonzalez* and Franco Kiglies. Headshots and bios for the full cast are available here.

*Appearing through an Agreement between City Theatre and Actors' Equity Association, the Union of Professional Actors and Stage Managers in the United States.
