Artist statement:
On the first phone call with Jennifer, she told me how important her mental health is for her. She likes to stay positive by going on walks and reading. I decided to photograph in her element. We went to the park where she likes to walk, and she brought her book. I think these moments of doing the things she likes are crucial for her healing. She can’t control her diagnosis or how chemo makes her feel, but she can control her mindset.

Twist on Cancer: Last year, after coming back from a wonderful vacation with my family, I was hit with a stage 4 cancer diagnosis. I barely had any symptoms, so this came as a shock to all of us. I am currently in treatment, and it has been going well thanks to my incredible doctors. This has been a traumatic experience; however, it has also made me realize that I am much stronger than I ever thought. I am so grateful for that strength and for my family and friends who have carried me through this. Since our first meeting, Claudia has been a joy to work with. She is a wonderful listener, and made it easy to share my story. Working with Twist Out Cancer has given me a sense of control over my story, a sense of calm and a renewed love for art, and for that I am deeply thankful.
